Geocache Description:

This journey is part of a cache series commemorating the travels of Leatherman in the late 1800s.

Leatherman once roamed SW Connecticut and SE New York from 1858 to 1889. He traveled a 365-mile loop between the Connecticut and Hudson rivers. Approximately every month he would repeat his journey. The man spoke primarily with grunts or gestures and dressed in crudely stitched leather from his hat to his shoes. The suit was made of soft-tanned calfskin leather and weighed about sixty pounds. He would sleep outside year-round mostly in caves around Connecticut and New York. More information on Leatherman can be found at this site.

From the parking area, the initial coordinates will take you to the summit of Prospect Mountain where you will find a decon container with the coordinates to the final cache, a 6x6x8 lock n' lock. Along the way you will pass through several different ecosystems, and you will probably feel very, very lonely. It seems that in this stretch of trail you will surely see more animal than human tracks. Total round trip is about 2 miles with a gain of 300 vertical feet to the half-way point, although there are a lot of ups and downs on the way. Just follow the only blazes you see. The destruction at the beginning and middle of the hike was caused by a tornado in the early nineties. An old high school friend of mine wept at the time, for she had hiked there her whole life, and felt the area had been ruined. I am glad to say that the area, although still filled with abundant evidence, has recovered quite nicely! Enjoy!

Note: after 5 recent hikes in this area I did find some cave-like formations, but resisted the urge to place the cache there as it is quite an unsafe area to get to. I, instead, placed the final cache in an interesting area that has a lot of nice shelters built in...
