Located on a nice lake in the city of lakes. Waterbird can be found
on an island in Morris Lake, which is situated between Shearwater
and Cole Harbour. This one is going to require a boat of some sort
to reach the island or you could always swim!
Between May and October each year the Canadian Airforce use this
lake to practice water landings with the Sea King helicopter. If
you are lucky enough to be on the island during a weekday you may
be treated to an amazing view of a Sea king landing on the
water.
The waterbird training is very
dangerous to both the aircrew flying it and to those of us on the
water nearby. Please stay outside the marked areas of the lake
while the aircraft is in the area (marked with large orange buoys)
and avoid passing in front of the aircraft during takeoffs and
landings.
If you use the parking coordinates N44 38.968 W063 29.490 and
launch your boat from there and travel to the island you will avoid
crossing the larger open area of the lake where the helicopter
plays. It is approximately a 1 km trip to the island from the boat
launch.
