"As Tough As Old Boots" (Canterbury) Multi-cache

This cache has been archived.

Sandfly tucker: This one will probably have issues with falling rocks or slips for quite a while, especialy during aftershocks, rain or frosty weather. I will have to see if I can come up with somthing tougher than old boots that will be a bit safer

Geocache Description:

Depending on you viewpoint, this is a moderately challenging three stage multi that takes you into some spectacular bluff country on the Port Hills. This is a great opportunity to explore the tracks in this area, all cut by volunteers from the Summit Road Society. Some parts of these tracks are a bit steep and rough underfoot.

First, a warning.

While often a pleasant place, the Port Hills can become nasty in some weather conditions. You should check the weather forecast before you set out (visit link) .
Cloud building up to the south is a bad sign, and the famous Christchurch “Beastly Easterly” can clag the Summit road out at very short notice, even on an otherwise nice day.

Windproof clothing and solid footwear with good traction is essential. Tell someone where you are going.

Unless you are very experienced operating in adverse conditions, do not attempt this in the dark or in low cloud/fog, It would spoil the view at the very least and there is a bit of potential to fall off something.

Access

There are many points you can enter this area, probably the easiest is to park at S43o 37.391, E172o 38.038 and walk from there. Another way to do it is to park your car at Jetty Road and walk from there, via what looks at first like a private driveway at S43o 37.340, E172o 38.947. This route now passes a new subdivision and will provide an enhanced “Exploration experience” There are several other caches near either of these points, you could make a big circuit and get quite a few of them.

The plan

It will pay to take a small mirror with you

Go to the first co-ordinates and look for a film canister with the co-ordinates and a hint for waypoint 2. The canister is a wee way off the track. Be sure you choose the return track carefully. There are two to choose from.

When you get to waypoint 2, you will find the co-ordinates for the last waypoint. You have the choice of following the track to the NW, or a direct approach. Do not choose the direct option unless you have a bit of experience in steep tussock country. The cache is about 20m above the last waypoint, disguised in a black cover and hidden in a fairly obvious place. You will not need to climb any rocks to get there, but the final approach is a little steep through tussock.
