Geocache Description:

Railroad History, located off West Middle Road. Another in the 'Bottle Series' of caches.

Danny is my youngest grandchild and he has had an obsession with trains all his young life. So, this cache is placed in a part of railroad history, Thorton Junction. This junction is still shown on some county maps but its importance has long passed. At this junction the Pennsylvania Railroad ran North and South and crossed the Nickle Plate Railroad (now the Norfolk and Western RR)which runs east and west. My father was always interested in trains and took me as a small boy in the 1940's to visit the small building that stood near here where the crossing was monitered to make sure trains didn't attempt to cross at the same time :) One of the more interesting parts of their job was to pass information to passing trains. They would rig the message by string to a signal post so that the engineer could hold his arm out the window and catch it. Very fascinating stuff to a young boy. The Pennsy tracks have been abandoned for quite some time, but the right of way is in the process of being added to the "rails to trails" project. Access to this cache is from West Middle Road. Parking is at N41 59.672 S080 22.527 As you proceed down the trail currently the Norfolk & Western RR doesn't have a crossing here so ATV's must briefly leave the trail and drive several hundred yards to the west before returning to the trail. Do not follow the ATV trail where it veers over to the dirt road. Stay on the RR right of way. Note the old signal post at this junction at N41 59.527 S080 22.531.NOTE: during the spring and summer mosquitoes can be very bad on the trail.

So...This cache is placed in memory of my Dad and in honor of Danny X. who continues the family interest in trains. To them I lift a bottle.
