...or "The Illinois River Cache." Placed @ the end of Lake Wedington Trail where it meets the Illinois River.
Lake Wedington Trail in the Ozark National Forest is 7.7 miles long one way starting on Hwy 16 and dead ending @ the river. Along the way it crosses Washington County 849 twice and makes it's way thru the forest.
DIRECTIONS from Fayetteville: Take Hwy 16 west for approximately 1 mile past the Lake Wedington Trailhead. Turn right on Washington County Road 849 and drive in a northerly direction for 2.6 Miles. Turn right just before a Power Transmission Line @ 36 07.432 094 23.838 and drive .55 miles to Forest Road 1752. Turn right on FR 1752 and drive 1.3 miles to a recently graveled parking area. You can park here or drive about 100 yards further on the "Cobbled" road and park at a gap in the fence where the Wedington Trail crosses FR 1752. The co-ordinates here are: N 36 08.580 W 094 22.681. I would mark this as a Waypoint as it is possible to get off the trail.
Getting to this cache is not an easy task, as it is extremely steep coming back up the trail from the river.
The cache will take time in both your drive and hiking but is a worthwhile trip. I didn't see anyone else on this hike but got to experience deer and 4 baby armadillos looking for food. I watched them for a good 20 minutes while I relaxed coming out.
Unfortunately there is a huge uprooted tree blocking the trail about 50 feet from the cache which will make the trek even more difficult to navigate around.
This cache is a standard size ammo box.
