This is a 2 stage multi cache which is sixth in our series of Mural caches. The 1st stage will give you the coordinates to the final, a NANO log-only cache. Finding the 2 stages will give you the opportunity to view four of Vernon’s murals. I think this multi will give you a challenge, mostly the final stage. You will NEED to BRING A PENCIL. Logbook is tiny, so you can use initials, but visitors are few & far between!
**** You might have to pretend that your GPS is a camera because muggles of the parking kind might be seen at both stages during the daytime. As there are tourists taking the walking mural tour, you will get away with this ruse. However, to be on the safe side, I don't recommend doing this one in the dark as muggles of the drunk/drugged or homeless kind might be hanging about in one of the alleys you need to be in. I'm sorry, but at the final you will probably see a lot of trash lying about because of its tendancy to be a night-time hang-out. Come on out to do some urban caching and spend time in downtown Vernon viewing its murals. These beautifully illustrated historic murals were created by artists led by lead artist, Michelle Loughery, for downtown Vernon. This project has been funded by the Government of Canada, the Downtown Vernon Association and the City of Vernon. Every year, a group of young artists participate in the project to develop skills that they could use in the workforce. The murals have been created with photographs obtained from the local Heritage Societies and Vernon Museum Archives of actual Vernon and area residents. These murals preserve the historical heritage of Vernon and give the community and tourists a glimpse into our rich past. The four murals that you’ll be seeing (not necessarily in this order)at the three locations are: Okanagan Lake The lake has always been a major part of life in the Okanagan providing food, work, and leisure for the many residents of the area. On a clear summer’s day, sailboats can still be seen sailing on the waters of Okanagan Lake. Pictured is the only two-mast sailboat available until modern times. The Creamery Truck In the early 1900’s the creamery truck was a familiar sight on rural roads, making its rounds collecting cream cans from dairy farms for delivery to the creamery. Vernon Steam Laundry In 1908, Mr. Cecil Johnston opened Vernon’s very first commercial laundry. They promised prompt and satisfactory service. According to the Vernon News, the Vernon Steam Laundry "opened its doors for business on Monday... a telephone has been installed in the office, and a covered delivery wagon put on, so that the proprietors are in the position to give prompt and satisfactory service to their patrons." Office of the Vernon News J.A. McKelvie is perhaps best known as the editor of the "Vernon News," the second newspaper to be published in the interior of British Columbia. The newspaper included local and world news, serialized books, and a popular column entitled 'Town and Country' that detailed community life on a weekly basis.
