Geocache Description:

In Minley Woods area North of M3 Motorway

Silent Sentry 1 is one of six caches that have been laid out to allow cachers to complete them individually, in pairs, triples or as a complete set of six. Each cache is traditional and can be logged separately, the cache itself is a 20x10x10 cms(8x4x4 ins)plastic container 'salted' with goodies. The whole route comprises a 6 - 7 mile easy cycle ride (or a 'good' walk)on Hawley Common and in Minley Woods area.

The area can be accessed by parking at either:
a. N 51 19.269 W000 49.566 (GR SU 83852 57814) - a small parking area off the roundabout on the A 327 (this is closest to Silent Sentry 1), or:

b. N 51 19.568 W000 47.455 (GR SU 84342 5925 at Starve Acre) which has ample parking and gives access to the 'set' at Silent Sentry 4 or 5 (depending on which direction you want to go).

Alternatively, there are several layby areas on the A 30 West of Blackwater

The terrain is given 1.5 stars simply because it can get a bit boggy in bad weather in some places, the going is generally quite easy. Anyone with a pushchair will have to exert some puff at some points on the route! The land is owned by the MoD who allow 'managed' access.

The countryside is mixed conifer and heathland with deer to be seen by the alert (especially on the Minley Woods side) and plenty of species of birds and butterflies.

This is our first attempt at putting out caches so advice/improvements will be welcomed. All caches are meant to be easy to find.

Please Note: This is a Military Training Area to which Public access is open at all times but which can involve the use of Pyrotechnics. One of the safety rules for public access is:- " Do not, (and ensure that children do not) approach, touch or pick up any metal objects lying on the ground. Please adhere to all Byelaws."

MOD Managed Access Areas are Military Training Areas to which Access is open at all times, but where Military Training takes place that might involve the use of Pyrotechnics. The areas come under military byelaws at all times. One of the safety rules for public access is

Adhere at all times to instructions and to the Byelaws covering the area. Do not, (and ensure that children do not) approach, touch or pick up any metal objects lying on the ground.
