Bryan History Tour Mystery Cache

This cache has been archived.

Prime Reviewer: As there's been no cache to find for months, I'm archiving it to keep it from continually showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements. If you wish to repair/replace the cache sometime in the future, just contact us (by email), and assuming it meets the guidelines, we'll be happy to unarchive it.

Geocache Description:

This cache takes you on a short walking tour of downtown Bryan, Texas and then to a physical cache in a green area in Bryan closer to College Station.

The coordinates take you to the first of five points of interest in downtown Bryan. I will provide the coordinates of all five spots below. Each spot has a marker with a year. Mark the last two digits of that year for each spot to find the final cache which is a physical cache elsewhere in Bryan.
You will need:
1) Something to take notes on (you can print this page).
2) Transportation to the final cache. You can walk to the first five spots, but the final cache is not
within walking distance.
3) The ability to interpret Roman numerals.
M=1000, D=500, C=100, L=50, X=10, V=5, I=1

I. 30 40.426, 96 22.500 - Oldest church in continuous use in Bryan. According to this marker, when did it move to Bryan?

II. 30 40.439, 96 22.481 - Always thought the "moat" around this building was more than just for looks. What is the symbol you see on the right of the doorway? You will have to convert the Roman numerals to Arabic ones to solve the puzzle.

III. 30 40.461, 96 22.409 - How things have changed. Once a bank, now a center of technology. What is the year on the plaque?

IV. 30 40.394, 96 22.390 - You will find a cornerstone with a symbol (look familiar?) and a year.

V. 30 40.380, 96 22.396 - Look at the year on the cornerSTONE (not the plaque). Elsewhere on the front of this building you will find a stone declaring this to be the last headquarters of what organization? Try to visit while this place is open: 10-8 Monday, Tuesday & Thursday. 10-5 Friday & Saturday. Closed Wed. and Sun. They have restored the interior.

So, take the last TWO digits of the years discovered above and fill out line 1. Add the digit in line 2. (Do NOT carry any numbers. For example, 9 + 2 = 1.). Take the result, line 3, and just fill in the blanks in the coordinates on line 4 in order.

I II III IV V

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ (Line 1)

 7 1 8 7 6 8 8 8 1 8 (Line 2)

___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ (Line 3)

OK, almost there. Just fill in the blanks in order:

30° __ __ . __ __ __, 96° __ __ . __ __ __ (Line 4)

Final cache is in a green area accessed from 29th Street. There is actually a paved spot to pull off the road and park near where Rosemary intersects. There is tall grass and a swamp nearby, so bug repellant and long pants are suggested. Never seen anyone in this area, so muggles shouldn't be a problem. Please replace the cache in the tree to keep it from floating away if the water gets high. Original cache contents include: collapsable camp cup, 2 glow sticks, mid-sized etch-a-sketch, spring clamp, and spare ziplocks. Final note, the coordinates of the downtown locations may be a little off. The buildings seemed to throw off my GPSr. But they should get you close enough with the clues I've provided.
