This two-stage cache will introduce you to the less-traveled western side of Campgaw Mountain. The hide is nothing special but if you like exploring, then take this backdoor entrance into Campgaw Reservation.
This side of Campgaw Mountain is crisscrossed with trails, some with very old blazes, but none of which could I find on new or old hiking maps. Some of the trails are used by riders from the nearby horse stables, which are located on the grounds of the former Nike Missile Base.
Start the hunt from the Oakland side of Campgaw Reservation.Parking is available for a few cars near Glen Gray Rd. From there, you'll find a nearby, unmarked trail leading uphill
I bushwhacked most of the way to place Stage 1, which is a medium-sized Nalgene container. A topo map might show you an easier way, although the cross-country route was not difficult. Along the way I found some ruins, the ever present rockwalls, and a very nice stream that was really rushing when I placed the cache. Who knows what else is out there? Check out ruins at N41 03.163 W074 12.958.
For Stage 2, which is the usual ammo box, you might follow old trails some of the way. Pick the right route and you'll find an easy way across the stream, although if the weather is dry there will likely not be much water to challenge you.
The terrain is not terribly difficult and a semi-direct roundtrip is two miles or less. Leave yourself
at least an hour for this cache, more if you like to aimlessly follow unmarked trails.
