Defibbin

There are many people in America who are huge fans of the Soap Opera. Shows like 'Days of Our Lives', 'One Life to Life', 'Live and Let Die', 'Life and the Lovers Who Lay in It', and 'General Hospital', are adored by millions, but few know where it all started.

'The Defibrillator Diaries' was a show that was pitched in 1971 by none other than Jerry Garcia. Garcia had always had a soft spot for hospital love stories and thought that The DD's, as they were called by those on the 'inside' would really revolutionize American culture and life. He went from studio to studio, telling everyone who would listen about the great idea he had for a show about a man and his defibrillator.

On one sunny day in 1973, Ben Oppenheimer, Robert Oppenheimer's brother, bumped into Jerry Garcia at a local McDonald's. The two got to talking and it just so happened that Ben had an honorary seat on the Board of Directors at NBC. The two went to the director of NBC at that time, pitched the show, and the network agreed to put together a pilot.

The photo posted here is the only known promotional image ever created for the series, that unfortunately ate the dirt when executives actually saw the result of pen put to paper on this undeniably awful idea.

As you may have guessed by the image above, the series was set to star none other than David Hasslehoff, which is why the cache bears the name of the show. You see, many know Hasslehoff comes from Germany, but few know the story of his immigration into the U.S.. One morning, Jenny Honeydew (yes, that's her real name), who was director of the nearby day care center, came to work to discover a wicker basket with a tiny German baby inside. He had dashing good looks and Honeydew decided to take him in.

Miss Jenny Honeydew had a penchant for lifeguards. She had posters all over her walls and would even take little Davie to the beach to stare at the lifeguards with binoculars from 100 or more yards away. Many believe it was Miss Jenny's strange fascination with those men in orange that led to Hasslehoff's big break as star of the television series 'Baywatch'.
Another thing that not many people know is that Garcia and Oppenheimer became great friends and later went on to create their own ice cream line. The two were best friends until Garcia's death in 1995, at which point Ben Oppenheimer decided to create an ice cream flavor 'en memorium' to Garcia.

So now you know the story behind most every daytime soap opera, David Hasslehoff, and the long time friendship between a musician and a scientist.
