Geocache Description:

This is a two-part multi-cache. Both stages are located within close driving distance of each other and can easily be done in one caching trip (maybe even at lunch if you work in the right part of town).

Stage 1 -

Go to the listed coordinates for this cache. Nearby you will find a State of Tennessee Historical Marker providing some information about a war hero who graduated from Bartlett High School. DO NOT TRY TO READ THE MARKER FROM THE STREET - ACTUALLY GO INTO THE PARKING LOT. You should be able to read it from your vehicle. Read the information provided on that marker and use it to determine to coordinates to the final stage of this cache.

  1. Find the year this soldier died in battle and multiply that four digit number by the soldier's division number in the Marines. Divide that product by 26 and then round up to remove all fractions. Subtract 7 and you now have the last three digits for the final stage's latitude coordinates.

  2. To find the the last three digits of the longitude coordinates for the final stage, complete the following steps. Find the last two digits of the marker number (upper right side of the marker). Multiply that two digit number by the first number in the marker number (upper left corner of the marker). Add that product to the year that the soldier was born. Take that resulting four digit number and subtract 1493. The resulting three digit number is to be used at the end of the longitude coordinates for the final stage of this cache.

Final Stage -

Using the coordinates you calculated in Stage 1 of this cache, travel a short distance to arrive at the final stage. This is an easy "Park and Grab" but may be rather muggle intensive at lunch and dinner time. Be stealthy and don't get busted! You are looking for a plastic film canister containing a log book. Bring your own pencil. I hope you enjoyed learning a little bit about this heroic man from our own backyard.
