While this little park doesn't sport the most
modern types of amenities, some nice scenery and some recent
improvements based on local history just beg for a cache to be
placed here. The cache is a fairly easy, two stage offset
multicache. The above listed coordinates take you to a sign which
gives a brief history of this area. Find the answers to the
following questions:
1) In what year was a house contracted to be built?
2) How long is the WHT in miles?
3) In what year did tragedy strike?
Using these answers, the final cache is located at
N39 38.0DE W078 06.ABC.
Where:
A = The last digit of the answer to Question #3
B = The 3rd digit of the answer to Question #1
C = The 2nd digit minus the 1st digit of the answer to Question
#2
D = The sum of the last digits of the answers to Question #1 and
Question #3
E = The 2nd digit of the answer to Question #2
Once you have the coordinates to the final cache, look for the
Spruce Pine Hollow Trail located at the back of the park. It is
marked in white. This takes you along the Meadow Branch of Sleepy
Creek and joins up with the Tuscarora Trail marked in blue. Where
the two trails meet, follow the Tuscarora Trail to the right and
that will lead you to the cache. The cache is just a short way off
the trail. The walk is not long - our coordinates have this cache
about .2 miles from the parking area. We would recommend getting
the GPSr ready at the parking area, rather than trying to get a
lock while on the trail. We find it works better that way. Because
of the iffy satellite reception in this valley, don't be afraid to
use the clue provided. Oh, and while you're hiking around the area
and reading about the history, you might as well check out the
ruins as well....
The actual cache is a regular size ammo can initially stocked
with a few geocaching buttons and kid items. We might add a few
more things as SWAG becomes available. There’s an
unregistered travel bug tag with the log book for the FTF.
Enjoy.
