Beautiful alpine hike to a manned Forest Service lookout on Nason
Ridge at 6237 ft. Follow FS rd 6910 off US 2, 3 miles to start of
trail at 3,300ft. You are looking for a 3x5 inch Snap-Lok
container.
Lace on the hiking boots and get ready for some alpine wandering.
10 mile r/t hike with 3,000 ft elevation gain that will take you by
Round Mountain and along Nason Ridge. Excellent views on both sides
of the ridge down to US 2 to the south and Lake Wenatchee to the
north. Cache was placed in a heavy snow year with 4-6 ft. still on
the ground in mid May. Cache is located on a rock outcropping that
melts out early, so should be accessable much of the year. Once the
snow melts there is very little water, so bring plenty. The first
mile will take you through an old burn, so get an early start. This
area can be brutal on a hot day. Goats are often seen at the
lookout and on the rock outcroppings along the trail, so keep an
eye out for them. You'll pass She'll Be Coming geocache on Round
Mountain, so you might want to take the short detour for that. Also
my other new geocache Goat Rock about halfway. Watch for goats
here. Alpine Lookout at 6237ft. commands an outstanding view in all
directions. This is one of the few remaining lookouts that are
manned durring the fire season. Say hi to the FS personal and I'm
sure they would be happy to show you around. The cache is located
about 200 ft. west of the lookout.
Caution this is not a walk in the park, so wear good hiking boots
and take the proper gear for a full day hike. You can also access
this trail via Merritt Lake. If you can arrange a pickup this makes
an excellent one way hike.
