Geocache Description:

Take a walk in the woods and name the trees to find this cache. A round trip of about 1km on gravel paths with one flight of steep steps (which can be avoided as described below).

The co-ordinates are for the parking area, which is on a one-way single-track road from Errwood Reservoir. The road is closed to motor vehicles on Sundays from 10:30 to 17:30 in May–Sept to encourage other leisure users. For a really enjoyable longer walk in, park at either Errwood Reservoir or Derbyshire Bridge.

To find the cache, identify the tree at each waypoint and assign the tree value to the waypoint letter. Use these values to work out the cache coordinates. GPS accuracy is an issue here, so I’ve given full descriptions of each waypoint location.

Tree values:

0=Pine. 1=Horse Chestnut. 2=Larch. 3=Rowan. 4=Oak. 5=Holly. 6=Weeping Willow. 7=Silver Birch. 8=Beech. 9=Sycamore.

Tree waypoints:

A. N53 15.481 W001 59.081. Tree A is in the parking area.

B. N53 15.508 W001 59.070. As you walk along the road, tree B is to your right on the edge of the slope. It is shorter than the trees around it and has rocks at its base.

C. N53 15.528 W001 59.064. As you start walking down the path off the road, tree C is directly in front of you at the start of the sharp right turn.

D. N53 15.536 W001 59.040. Just before you reach the first footbridge, tree D is to the left of the path.

E. N53 15.579 W001 59.020. Just after you’ve crossed the second footbridge, tree E is down at the water’s edge to your right.

F. N53 15.668 W001 59.029. Tree F, the smallest of all, is in a bed in the path.

Cache location:

The cache is hidden at N 53° 15.ABC' W 001° 59.DEF. It’s on level ground and easy to access – no climbing needed.

There are some steps between trees B and C. These can be avoided by walking alongside the (very quiet) road after B and then doing trees F to C in reverse. This will increase total distance to cover to approx 1.5 km but it is then all on the flat or gentle slopes.

With thanks to the Forestry Commission for giving me permission to place this cache. Please show your appreciation by taking away any litter you find during your visit.
