Shoreline #6: My Darling Clementine Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

ClipperCreekWanderer: Sorry. The ammo box is gone. I would replace it, but this location was so remote and well hidden, the whomever took it was probably using the Geocache website to find it. I seriously doubt it was found by accident. Several of my other ammoboxes have disappeared in this area. It is pretty sad. It was nice having it out there for those people who look for "lonely" caches for challenges. It was certainly lonely these last few year. RIP

Geocache Description:

4 mile round trip hike. View of Lake Clementine. Cache is hidden in an ammo box in a dripwall. Below the dripwall is a field of wild grape vines.

Please park near corner of Boole road and Cerrro Vista
_____ N38 58.896 W 120 59.155
Trailhead is at
_____ N38 59.022 W 120 59.074
Do not block trailhead.

Before you go to the cache, check out the beautiful overlook of clementine lake at N38 58.208 W120 58.340 (Long Point). Originally this cache was destine for this location, but I couldn't find a good hiding place. ( Too much poison oak and too many vandals. )

The trail is a dirt road. It has been blocked with concrete blocks at the top to prevent people using the area as a dump. Near the overlook, the state of California put some concrete blocks to prevent people driving on the road. So please walk or bike.

If you take the road to the north of the overlook you will end up on a beach across river from the Upper Lake Clementine picnic area. If you take the road to the south you will go toward the cache.

In the middle of summer in a dry year it is possible to reach this cache from Upper Lake Clementine. HOWEVER, I am NOT condoning or suggesting that. I don't want to hear of any geocachers drowning in the river like the old song about "My darling clementine"(Lost and gone forever). Original cache items are water wings, water goggles and other things to remind you of water safety.

Beware of snakes, poison oak, sun, ticks and mosquitos. Bring drinking water. This trail can be fairly exposed and warm in summer.

Congratulations to Warrior Rider on FTF.
Congratulations to ForestBloom on STF. AND thanks ForestBloom for choosing my cache for your 100th find.

P.S. On June 27th, 2004 the area from Long Point to the cache site was burned. The fire was started by an abandon campfire at upper lake clementine on the OTHER SIDE of the river. The fire jumped the north fork of the river and rapidly raced uphill. Fortunately, it was stopped by CDF before reaching any houses. Today, years later, there is, thankfully, little evidence of the fire.

PPS. This cache has now been added to the shoreline caches. My GPSr says that it is at 1102 ft, which means you can stand here at the proposed shoreline and see the upper lake clementine picnic area that would be drowned if the dam goes in. ALSO continue down this road a little while and you will see a historical lime kiln that will also be drowned. Hmm. This cache definitely has a drowning theme.

See the map of extent of the lake behind the proposed dam (visit link)

PPS. 5/1/2009 MarshallOD found my description of the lookout confusing. Sorry, I will add a waypoint. It is not a tower, just a limestone dike cliff, similar but much much smaller than robber's roost. Here are GPS breadcrumbs for all the trails from the long point lookout area: (visit link)
Hope that helps the next cacher.

Congrats to Warriorrider on FTF.
