Aberford Almshouses Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Dalesman: As this cache has been in need of attention for some time, with no update from the CO, I'm archiving it to keep it from showing up in search lists, and to prevent it from blocking other cache placements.

Please note that if geocaches are archived by a reviewer or Geocaching HQ for lack of maintenance, they are not eligible for unarchival.

Geocache Description:

An easy drive-by cache on an ancient Roman section of the old Great North Road.

The village of Aberford is equidistant from London and Edinburgh, the journey to each from here being around 200miles. The section of road where the cache is situated is easily identifiable as an ancient Roman road, with the remains far beneath the tarmac. Towards the southern boundary of the village lie the wonderfully Gothic Aberford Almshouses, built by the Gascoigne Sisters Isabella and Elizabeth in 1844 to commemorate their father and two brothers who died in quick succession in 1842 and 1843. The cache is close by. The cache is also in the area of a roadside milestone and is bookmarked in the Milestones and Others list. More information on milestone spotting can be found at www.milestonesociety.co.uk
