Geocache Description:

This is my first cache placement. It should be relatively easy to find but you will definitely be out in the open when looking for it. There is plenty of parking available in a lot close to the cache site. This is a "Log Only" (a small pencil used to be available, but no room in the replacement container). This one is hopefully educational as well as fun to find. It is to commemorate the National Weather Service and is located at the Upper Air Inflation Building. This is the only location in Alabama for the upper air balloons to be launched. They are released twice daily at the same time from all locations throughout the United States. This is done at 0:00 and 12:00 UTC (Greenwich Mean Time) 365 days per year. (CDT = GMT - 5:00) These Flight Trains consist of a Neoprene balloon with a biodegradable parachute and a radiosonde (instrument package). These assend at 1000'/min. and reach an altitude of 90,000 - 100,000 feet in a 90 min. flight. Only 1/3 of these are recovered for reuse. Further details can be found at http://www.srh.noaa.gov/bmx/upperair/radiosnd.html Happy hunting and please replace it exactly as you found it. ***Update 6/2/14 - The structure where the container was located has apparently been totally removed by Alabama Power but I was able to modify my hide to fit in the remaining 'full sized' structure that was adjacent to the 'cut-off' original. Be careful how you replace it....you might accidentally make it real difficult for the next cacher.*** ***Update 8/24/22 - The entire structure was removed and replaced with a concrete variety. Had to redo the container to fit the newest change. You'll need a TOTT (something to push with) to remove and replace the container.
