Fluorite mines were once abundant in this area. Fluorite is a mineral popular for its glassy luster and wide variety of colors. Besides being popular with collectors, fluorite is an important industrial mineral. The most common use is as a flux in producing steel. It is also used in making hydrofluoric acid, which is used in pottery, optics, and plastics. Other uses are making opalescent glass and in enameling cookware.
