Nawiliwili Breakwater Traditional Cache

Nawiliwili was named after the abundant wiliwili trees in the area.
Another meaning of wiliwili is turning in all directions, this
meaning has proved to be strangely appropriate today as we look at
the evolution of this area in the past 100 years.
Before the breakwater was completed in 1930, this was the landing
in Nawiliwili in the early 1900's. During this period, larger ships
had to anchor outside the harbor and their cargo was shuttled in by
smaller boats to this pier.
In the distance past the pier, you can see a hillside with no
beach. This is approximately where Duke's is located today.
Kalapaki beach did not exist at that time and it was formed by the
deposition of water-borne sediment caused by the change in currents
and material that was dredged from the harbor during construction
of the harbor. .
Hule'ia is the largest stream flowing into Nawiliwili Bay and the
only one that still flows regularly today. The other four streams
were extremely altered or halted by the redesign. Hule'ia travels
through the ahupua'a of Ha'iku and Kipu before it reaches the small
boat harbor and empties into the harbor.
