Geocache Description:

Trailside cache; easy walking about .2 mi. from parking area and 50 feet off trail

This cache honors Colonel Frederick Wilhelm Blees, one of the great benefactors in Macon, MO history. The big instituional-style building south of the cache (now an assisted apartment complex) was originally Blees Military Academy, and later the Still-Hildreth Osteopathic Sanitorium. Col. Blees was originally from Prussia, and he used his family riches and influence to bring a variety of public use items to Macon such as paved streets at the end of the 19th century.

Col. Blees also owned the famous American Saddlebred horse Rex McDonald and owned a carriage factory in town that briefly produced automobiles. His untimely death was a major shock to the community, but his influence is still felt in Macon today.

The cache is an ammo box about .2 mi. from the parking area and 50 feet off the trail. I will bring some travelers my next visit. It is just off highway 63 but you will need to enter the area from the road north of the park as it is not a through entrance directly from the main entry to the area. It's a good resting place for travel bugs headed south towards I-70 or ones northbound to Iowa.

Permission granted to place this cache by the Mayor of the City of Macon, May 2006, in honor of the town's 150th anniversary July 4th, 2006.
