Geocache Description:

Memorial Hall was built to be quarters for the J.H. Converse Post, No. 67, Grand Army of the Republic, and has served over the years as a center for memorial activities for those who served in all wars. Charles E. Chaffee (1818-?), donor of the building, was not a member of the G.A.R., so motivation for his act of generosity is unknown.

Dedication of the new G.A.R. building on June 10, 1891, was a major town wide event. In the parade the line of march consisted of 24 units, including the First Company Governor's Foot guard, 61 men, and Colt's Band from Hartford, 21 pieces.

Memorial Hall is a rugged building of quarry-faced gray Munson granite displaying typical features of the Richardsonian Romanesque style such as monumental proportions, over-scaled Syrian entrance arch, and corner tower. Inside you will find ash woodwork, an elliptical stairway, and tower-room fireplaces. It is beautifully preserved.

Two brass cannons are in the front yard. Nearby are monuments which honor those who served in World War I, World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam Conflicts.

At the coordinates listed above is a plaque. Notice the numbers across the top of this plaque. These numbers hold the clue to the final stage of this cache. Use the last 3 digits of the numbers to represent ‘X’.

Stage 2: N 41 55.(X – 496) W 072 37.(X – 173)

There was a great deal of bounce at the final - even using 2 GPSrs. Because of that, I’m giving a clue for stage 2. Please let me know if the coordinates need adjustment.

Too small for trades. Please bring your own pencil.
