Two Airmen Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

CapJackSparrow: I visited this cache today. There has been recent ground work digging a drainage trench along the side of this road, making the grass verges higher and very uneven.

Consequently the walk to the final location has become even more hazardous as the cars seem to be going quicker than ever along the road.

So it is with some regrets that I have finally decided to call time on this cache. It had a great run of over 15 years, but now it's time to go.

Geocache Description:

This is a roadside cache idea for park, walk a short distance and caching.

Please note the additional logging request here.

This cache marks the spot where one of the UKs first air crashes occurred.

Captain Patrick Hamilton, the pilot and Lieutenant Wyness-Stuart his observer, were flying a Deperdussin monoplane of the Army Air Corps (there was no RAF at this time) from Farnborough and whilst passing over Gravely a fault in an engine valve brought about a situation where an engine cowl damaged strut wires which then became tangled up in the engine.

Locals were so moved that there were crowds of people trying to attend the funeral but the church was so full that many could not get inside. The memorial was paid for by locals as a way of paying their respects.

The co-ordinates are for the memorial but the cache is in a fairly obvious place within 6 feet or so.

PARKING. N51.57.2004 W000.13.596 space for one car each side of the road.

This is a long straight, busy, narrow and fast bit of road. Please park at the suggested spot and walk the 100 yards or so to the cache. Making this bit of road narrower than it already is is not big and not clever. Please also keep your eyes peeled and use the verge to walk on. Cars are hard, people are soft and in people / car fights cars usually win and being hit by a car will smart.

PLEASE don't make yourself a hazard by stopping next to the memorial and putting your hazard lights on. This is a road with very fast moving traffic. If it isn't busy when you get there, it could well be in 30 seconds! Geocaching is a hobby that often involves walking more than 12 feet.

Please don't leave cut and paste logs for this cache. It is not part of a microyomp, but is a cache capable of holding swaps and trackables. It brings you to a location with some history that you would probably simply pass by if it were not for this hobby.

From 5th April 2014 cut and pasted logs will be deleted. This is an ALR that I will enforce.
