Geocache Description:

Mt. Harmony Cemetery -- Gates are locked 30 minutes before dark. Please respect the residents.

The “After Life Series” is a very small sampling of a few of the public (and easy access) cemeteries in our county. More can be found on the internet about cemeteries in your area.

I was rather shocked to find that Ritchie County has an estimated 350 cemeteries both public and private. Their history is rich and the monuments are beautiful. There is an entire history just on the material and type of grave marker. For instance, monument types can range from simple stones to huge obelisks and columns. One that I found particularly interesting is the “tree-stump” tombstone. These first appeared in the 1870's and was popular for approximately sixty years. Seen in Europe and the United States, these carvings qualify as folk art. The tree-stump design shows a living tree that has been cut down, suggesting that the individual was also cut down in the prime of life.
