Tamarack Mtn. Lookout Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

WR7X: 19 years, it's had a good run but I'm not interested in maintaining a cache so far from home now.

Geocache Description:

This is the seventh in my series of hides near fire lookout towers. Welcome to Tamarack Mtn. Lookout, 4979', in the Umatilla National Forest.

Established in 1925 as a detection post with a 100' tree platform, the present 100' steel Aermotor tower was constructed in 1933. It has been used during extreme fire danger and after lightning storms for quite awhile now. The Oregon Department of Forestry staffs the lookout full-time (5 days a week) during the summer.

The original ground house accidentally burned down many years ago and the garage was converted to living quarters. It can be rented for overnight stays at the Heppner Ranger Station. If someone is renting the cabin (very rare) during your visit, please be courteous and let them enjoy their stay.

No views can be had from the ground, so if you want to see it, you'll need to climb the tower. This is not one for those afraid of heights or for small children.

The terrain rating here relates more to the road in, the last half mile is rocky and slow-going, 4WD highly suggested.

The cache is an ammo box. It has a logbook, trading items and something to write with.
