From the information post at the entrance :
Clough Castle is an Anglo-Norman motte and bailey castle dated
by excavation in 1951-2 to the reign of King John ( 1199-1216)
Over 100 mottes are known in the Earldom of Ulster, (mostly
concentrated on the border between the carldom of Antrim and Down)
and the Irish-held counties beyond.
Clough was built in a strategic spot on one of the main routes
between Newry and Downpatrick, 2 miles from Dundrum Castle and 6
miles from Downpatrick.
The tall mound or motte is 8m high above its ditch and 26m
across its summit.
Cache is a small camouflaged tab lock box with a True Utility
keyring pen as FTF prize!
