Geocache Description:

Warning: The Odyssey Cache Series requires a high level of physical fitness, the ability to travel with competence in a remote wilderness location, and  capability to overcome numerous obstacles on extremely rough and treacherous terrain.  Do not attempt this alone, tell someone where you will be going, and above all  have fun.

The Odyssey

"...once he had drunk the dark blood the words came ringing from the prophet in his power:

'A sweet smooth journey home, renowned Odysseus,

that is what you seek

but a god will make it hard for you - I know -

you will never escape the one who shakes the earth,

quaking with anger at you still, still enraged

because you blinded the Cyclops, his dear son."

-The Odyssey by Homer (Translation by Robert Fagles)

The first in a series of four caches along the Little Sur River.  Heed the warning in the short description, or you may find yourself as unlucky or worse as Odysseus himself.  The cache should be relatively easy to find once you are in the general area.  A FTF coin, as well as a Sgt Stitches Signature Coin are there for the taking.

Trailhead: Bottchers Gap (N 36 21.347 W121 48.828)

Follow Hwy 1 to the turnoff for Palo Colorado Canyon.   Follow the Palo Colorado Canyon to its top at Bottchers Gap.  A $5.00 parking fee is charged by the campground host at Bottchers, and in my opinion, it is worth every penny to have someone patrolling the parking lot and making sure everything is fine.

I might add at this point, that the warning in the short description to "not travel alone" also has some side benefits to this adventure.

From Bottchers Gap, follow the dirt road down towards the Pico Blanco Boy Scout Camp.  In a little over a mile, you will see a trail sign pointing to the Little Sur River Camp.  Follow this trail for 1/2 mile or slightly more to the river.

The return route will take you back the way you came.  Hiking out the bottom of the river would require crossing private property and is not recommended.
