"The Walthour-Moss Foundation began with a gift from Mrs.
Virginia Walthour Moss of 1807 acres in 1978. The Foundation is
located in the Sandhills of North Carolina, one mile from the town
of Southern Pines. It occupies nearly 4000 acres today, virtually
unspoiled by progress and development. The implementation of proper
silviculture and ecological practices have made the Walthour-Moss
Foundation a true environmental preserve. The almost extinct
red-cockaded woodpecker is making a strong comeback on these
protected lands. Their habitats are tagged for study and monitoring
by naturalists. The land is also home to many other varieties of
birds, deer, raccoons, opossums, and rare fox squirrels." from the

Rules concerning access to the Walthour-Moss Foundation
preserve.
1. The Foundation is closed Tuesdays & Saturdays from 7:30am
to 12:30pm, September through March.
2. The Foundation is closed Sunset to Sunrise everyday.
3. Firearms, motorized vehicles, alcoholic beverages, taking of
plants, picnicking, camping and littering are prohibited.
4. Dogs are prohibited.
5. Trespassing on adjacent property is prohibited.
