On your way to this cache you’ll pass through one of Kitsap
Water Sheds. In here you will find the mighty Western Red CEDAR,
also known as Canoe-cedar, Pacific Red-cedar, Shinglewood and Giant
Arbor-Vitae (Tree of Life). Branches of this tree droop and turn up
at the tips. It has a large number of cones bent backwards along
the branches. Found on the coast and wet belt of the interior, it
likes cool, mild and moist locations. They can grow up to 60
meters. The TRUNK of the cedar spreads out at the BASE. Modern
uses: house siding, interior paneling, outdoor furniture, decking,
fencing, roof shakes. Traditional uses: wood: canoes, totem poles,
longhouses, household boxes, tools, paddles; pounded fibres: mats,
clothing, baskets, nets, fishing lines; medicines, religious
masks.
