Geocache Description:

Fourth in the Walkabout Series.

This cache can be found at the edge of Horseshoe Plantation, with a good view of Belle Tout Lighthouse, west of Eastbourne.

Built in 1832 the lighthouse was decommissioned in 1902 when cliff erosion made it inefficient. It was used as target practise during WW2 when it was severely damaged. It was bought in 1955 by the Cullinan family who lived there until 1980. During 1986 it was used as the primary location for an adaptation of Fay Weldon’s "Life and Loves of a She-Devil". In 1999, with the cliff edge rapidly approaching, the then owner moved it 17m inland, to give it an estimated further 200 years life!

Walkabout 4 falls into our second category of Walkabout caches. When in the area, we saw a location that was screaming out for a cache. So we obliged!

However the cache has been muggled twice so a third container has now been hidden on the eastern boundary of Horseshoe Plantation.

Horseshoe Plantation contains many birds, butterflies and orchids, and is a short distance from Birling Gap to its West.
A slightly longer walk to the east along the cliff tops will take you to the Beachy Head pub.
