Geocache Description:

Yes, after over 500 finds under our belts, we finally placed a cache! This is in an area that was brought to our attention by "The Bean Team", who placed a cache in this valley a while ago, but it fell victim to Muggles before it could be found. This entire area is absolutely gorgeous, so we have two ways to access this cache, both along this beautiful section of the Conestoga Trail. The starting point is the same for both routes.
The short route is about a 2½/3, the long way about a 2½/4 (mainly due to the length of the hike; the trail never really exceeds 2). Both routes have some moderately steep and rocky parts, so we averaged them for the ratings above.
We highly recommend the long way... it's about a 4½-mile hike round-trip, but it will take you on a loop that affords beautiful views of Kelly's Run and it's environs and past another cache. Start at the parking lot and follow the wide grassy path that begins past the yellow gate near the third base line on the ballfield and just follow the blue blazes; It will take you on a journey through some pretty woods, through a field that a farmer was kind enough to leave a path through, down a LONG hill with sporadic views of the Susquehanna, and down an abandoned road with loads of wineberries, blackberries, honeysuckle, birds and butterflies (Pinnacle Road West) before entering the woods again and following Kelly's Run itself. This part of the stream has many small waterfalls, and the path crosses it a couple times so remember proper footwear... we managed it just fine in run-of-the-mill waterproof hiking boots, even after a significant rainfall. Continue on the blue-blazed trail up the stream after finding the cache and you will be returned to the parking area after a little over a mile. This is by far the most enjoyable way to access this cache, but the short way is nice too...
The shorter route is about 2 miles round trip. The Kelly's Run trailhead is near the pavilion uphill from the parking coords listed. This route also has a couple stream crossings as well as some very peaceful grottoes along Kelly's Run. You could also take the long way back (the reverse route of the above "long way")... but don't! We did when we placed this and the LONG hill is all UP hill that way.
Either way you take, we hope you enjoy our first hide... please let us know what you think! Hopefully, we'll have time to hide a couple more along the loop. It's a crime to let an area this nice go cache-less!
Initial goodies for the first few finds: THREE travel bugs, a MiniDV video cassette, some AA batteries, a pair of Neida's home-made earrings, a yellow ball, and a Linksys router we didn't need any more. There is also a disposable camera, so please take a pic of yourself (or your group) and let us know when it's full.
Mucho thanks to The Bean Team for getting us there, CCCA for their advice when we were caching newbies, everybody who has contributed to this great sport by hiding caches, and especially the Lancaster Hiking Club who maintains the Constoga Trail System.
NOTE... when you reach the junction of the two streams near the cache, pay close attention to the direction you take. It's easy to get turned around down there, as the GPS reception can be pretty spotty, especially during the summer months when the leaves are up.
