Ammo box at the edge of an clearing that is in the middle of the Florida Trail loop in Hillsborough River State Park.
USGS maps show nothing but green in the area traversed by the 3.4 mile Florida Trail loop in HSRP. But there is a clearing that doesn't show up on the map. According to HSRP staff, this is the location of an old pine plantation. During the USARA Nationals Adventure Race in November 2005, one of the checkpoints was placed in this clearing. By the way, when I say "clearing", I mean no large trees - there's still plenty of brush, etc. in the way.
Although the cache is about 200 to 250 meters from three differnt points on the Florida Trail, it can be reached with virtually no real bushwacking. There is an old road/trail that leads to the clearing from the northern leg of the trail loop. If you don't find the old road or come in from the southern leg, you will definitely do some bushwhacking. Bushwhacking in this area isn't too bad as long as you are under tree cover. Bushwhacking across the clearing could be rough, as there are plenty of briars. Some bushwhack routes will require crossing a shallow canal.
The hiking distance to this cache looks to be a little less than a mile. But for a real challenge, you can follow the route that 2ndoer and I travelled to place this cache. We parked at the Oakridge equestrian area parking lot, spent seveeral hours mapping trails in Oakridge, then continued on to HSRP to place the cache. After placing the cache, we went out past the pool at HRSP and continued on to Dead River Park, where we bushwhacked our way across 17 runs to the Washburn equestrian area, then back up to Oakridge. 6 hours and about 27 miles later, we arrived exhausted at our cars.
