Geocache Description:

A small roadside cache with a great view of a fine dam.

As the sign says, Welcome to Androscoggin Reservoir Company’s Aziscohos Hydroelectric Project.

Aziscohos Dam is certainly one of the north country’s most picturesque dams. I can remember when pulp wood was sent over the dam via the elevated wooden sluiceway into the tumbling white water of the Magalloway River as part of the watercourse journey to the mills in Berlin, N.H. and beyond. Today the wood is transported by truck and the sluiceway has been replaced with a giant pipe supplying water to the small hydro plant tastefully hidden from view downstream and around the corner. Green power… YES!

The sign includes a map showing the location of boat launches for both white water and Aziscohos Lake, as well as camping, fishing, picnicking and sight seeing areas. The trailhead for a hike up beautiful Aziscohos Mt. is just north of the dam on Rt. 16.

The cache container is a surplus army decon container measuring about 3”x4”x2” and will therefore only accept small trade items and or travel bugs (we’ve dropped a bug in it to kick things off). DO NOT park on the road. Logging trucks fly around the corner and over the bridge, so watch for them. There are a couple of small gravel pullouts just uphill from the bridge which will put you in a convenient spot to start your hunt. It’s not a long or difficult walk and you will be rewarded with a spectacular view of the dam and the rushing Magalloway.

Be sure to check out our “Molechunkamunk” series which begin 5 miles north. Enjoy!
