Molechunkamunk, a.k.a. Upper Richardson Lake, lies within an unspoiled wilderness, rich in history, folk lore and wildlife. This cache is part of a series designed to share with you, some very special locations we have treasured in our lifetime (thus far), on and around this open space treasure we love so much.
I guess I was too young to really remember the first time I was brought to Millbrook as a child. It was long before the appearance of the present day boat launch and the parking lot. Access was limited to those with a key to the “singing gate” which was then located just off the hard road, the same gate that today stands at the entrance to the private camp lot. The land behind it and the fence is private property and should be respected as such.
In the countless times I have “arrived” at Millbrook, as a wilderness camper, a dam keeper’s child and ultimately a camp owner, there has never been a time when the scent of balsam and the stature of the grand pines failed to instill in me a sense of “home”, even if it simply returning from a shopping trip to town. I remember sleeping in the car when the lake was too rough to cross. I remember “piloting” the side wheeled steamship “Rowell”, which in its day was responsible for sending many a pulp log toward its eventual trip down the Androscoggin. My watch of course was limited to the dry dock rails upon which she had been abandoned years before. I remember the sadness I felt as her wooden upper decks where removed and her massive iron hull gone by way of the scrap man’s torch.
Many changes have taken place here and all over “Molechunkamunk”. One thing that has never changed though, is the sheer beauty of it all. This cache is meant to be a “warm-up” for those placed and to-be-placed in special spots around and about this slice of heaven, where as my father used to say, “You get to breathe the air first”.
We hope you enjoy this wonderful paradise. Please respect the environment and its inhabitants. Cache on!
