Just a short distance north of Foyers on the B852 is a small lay by that looks down on Boleskine graveyard. The graveyard is the burial place of the Fraser Clan. Looking around the graveyard you can see some excellent examples of funereal stonework and also the grave of John Anderson, friend of Robert Burns. The small stone building that you see at the bottom of the graveyard is where a man used to stay in order to guard the graves. This relates to the beginning of the19th century when grave robbing was a real fear.
On the other side of the road and slightly up the hill lies Boleskine House. Where once lived “the most evil man in the world” Aleister Crowley, also referred to as “The Beast”. It was believed that he held black magic ceremonies in the basement of the house and, some believe, in the grave yard. He lived here in the early part of the 20th century and was blamed for everything bad happening in the area, from unexplained deaths to Nessie. Latterly the house was owned by Jimmy Page, guitarist with Led Zeppelin and collector of Crowley memorabilia. The house is now a private residence.
There are many legends associated with the area, some say that there is a tunnel that links the graveyard to the house. There are also some that say the grave yard is the haunt of witches, many burial places have similar superstitions, perhaps denoting ancient corpse ways or spirit tracks along which the soul is thought to travel.
