Geocache Description:

This hide is just out of the Cemetary. It is a heavy camo job. Should be fun to find. Bring some OFF.

Stone Church Road in Moles youth was a beautiful winding road with huge trees lining each side and in between many homes. It gradually winded its way down into the heart of Elm Grove. It got its name from the Old Stone Church which was located in what is now known as Stone Church Cemetery. It was built in 1807 and demolished in the 1940's. Later another Stone Chruch was built at the bottom of the hill. That too was demolished for 1-70 in 1968 and now Stone Chruch is on East Cove Avenue. Additional info on Interstate 70 & the Demolision of Elm Grove's businesses, streets & homes. Interstate 70 was constructed through Elm Grove in 1968. Half of Elm Grove's business district & many street & homes were demolished to make way for the new highway. Elm Grove was never to be the same again. The west end of Elm Grove was mostly spared, so some of the displaced businesses did relocate there but most just went out of business. Landmarks such as the Princess Theatre, The Stone Presbyterian Church, The Scott Lumber Company and the Elm Grove Church of God all met with the wrecking ball. The Butler Florist & the Bates Butler home behind the florist were also taken. The Butler home was the second oldest home in the Grove. What a high price we had to pay for the construction of this highway & progress. The streets of Elm Grove used to be full of people every day of the week, as they went about their daily business. Everyone seemed to know everyone else & a more friendly town no man has ever known. Compare this with today & you will see about one fourth as many people on the streets. People were told that the Interstate would bring new life to the Grove's business district that the town would prosper, but this was not true. It took years for the east end of the Grove to recover & the Interstate had very little to do with the progress. Now everyone knows that the Interstate is a necessity, but you have to wonder why they had to route it directly through the Grove. One must wonder what our town would be like today if the road had been built around our business district. In many cases, the price of progress runs high. Elm Grove was certainly no exception. One reason for the route that was chosen, was that Wheeling Machine Products Plant, that was in the path of a more direct route, would have to be taken & many people would lose their jobs. This statement is not even a good argument. Look how many businesses were put out of business, how many homes were taken & how many streets were wiped off the map. In later years, Wheeling Machine Products quit business & was torn down to make way for the Elm Grove Crossing Mall. Those people that worked at Wheeling Machine lost their jobs anyway. The Crossing Mall brought some new business, but it could have been built at several other locations. It just makes sense that most of the Grove could have been saved with a little more effort. But Moles still has her mental pictures and can remember the fun times at the local Princess Theatre and then a walk up the street to the local soda shop.
