Geocache Description:

Cache is accessible off County Rd 47 about a 1/4 mile in. There is a marked trail, sign reads "foot travel welcome no motorized vehicles." Cache is located on National Forest land. There are a couple downed trees on the trail one of which requires stepping under and over the tree. There is a boat launch on Big Island Lake and the area near the cache has a place where a boat or canoe could be tied up. Big Island Lake is a pretty lake ideal for canoeing and small boating.

This cache gets it name from Ole Rolvaag's Famous novel Giants in the Earth. The Big Island Lake home, where he wrote the novel, used to sit on this site. Here is a link to info about Ole Rolvaag and his son, the former Minnesota governor, Karl Rolvaag who also spent time at Big Island Lake: The cache is a small coffee can that contains a squirt gun, laser pointer, fishing lure, travel bug, and a log book and pencil.
