Just west of the Presidents on highway 244 is a fun little picnic area at coordinates: N 43.53.219 W 103.28.380
Kids like to climb on rocks? They’ll love it here! There is plenty of run-around room and some granite to scamper on as well. Panoramic views of the back of Mt. Rushmore (not like on the t-shirts, I assure you), Harney Peak and granite spires are offered from the trail summit.
This site is fast becoming our family’s favorite picnic spot this summer. Tables are generously spaced and there are raised fire grates at each site. Parking is plentiful and convenient to the picnic sites. The updated Forest Service outhouse facility is the one amenity that is a necessity. No water on site, however. There is no charge to use this area but there are donation envelopes to help maintain this site, by the outhouse.
The cache lays just enough out-of-the way as not to attract attention from the scenic viewers/picnickers but close enough to make this an easy in, easy out. The best access is to follow the paved trail away from the outhouse but not up the hill to the viewing area. Continue straight ahead on the dirt path just to the right of the paved trail. It starts out as a rocky boulder field but quickly resembles the old roadbed that it is. Then you are on your own to the cache site.
This cache is all about little pins – hat pins, state pins, and small button pins. Please leave only such items. This is a small cache about the size of a cosmetic lotion jar. Bring your own pencil.
