Bosham Border Multi-Cache

This cache has been archived.

thekennelat79: I have reluctantly decided that this cache should be archived.
Local conditions and building works mean that I can't be sure when it will be safe to bring the cache back on-line.

Thanks to all of the cachers who have found this cache, and even more thanks to those who have said such nice things about it.

During the Christmas period, I will investigate the possibility of setting a new cache in the Bosham village area.

Geocache Description:

A pleasant stroll around the village of Bosham and its shoreline.

The above co-ordinates are not those of the cache.

Parking near the waters edge in Bosham can be a risky business! There is free parking on the beach but be aware that the tide can come in very quickly. Cars can and do get stranded in the sea! A Pay and Display car park is available at the village centre.

For those who object to paying for their parking, free on-street parking is available and entails only a short extra walk. Considerate and careful parking is currently available off Moreton Rd., (alongside a thatched cottage on the right as you drive into the old village.)

Bosham's history is long, some well documented and other steeped in myths and legends. Around 1000AD the Danes invaded Bosham and the story goes that they made off with the church bell only to lose it in what is now called the 'bell hole'. Locals say you can hear the bell ringing on stormy nights! Bosham is reputed to be the site of King Canute's attempt to stop the tide. He sat on his throne on the shore and commanded the sea to go back - obviously without success. Some historians believe that Canute's young daughter was drowned in the millstream and is buried in Bosham Church.

Bosham next appears on the Bayeaux Tapestry. As King Harold's home village, it was from here that he sailed to Normandy in 1064. Bosham Church is depicted on the Tapestry along with the history of the Battle of Hastings. However, the church is thought to pre-date Harold by about 300 years making it one of the oldest in England.

Go to N 50 49. 729 000 51. 591 W and look for a memorial to Gerald Marcuse G2NM

Write down the years of his birth and death as
Born A B C D Died E F G H

Go straight ahead through a five bar gate marked “The Slip- Private”. You are OK to do this because it is a Public Footpath.
Go to N 50 49. B (F-G) (F-G) 000 51. G G (F-G) W and look for a 35 mm film canister which contains further instructions.

At very high tides, it may not be possible to follow the footpath through “The Slip” without getting your feet wet. Unless, of course, your name is Canute and you have a bit more luck this time!

If you decide not to follow the coastal footpath then it is possible to reach the film canister by following the main road out of the village and turning off down Moreton Road, (see above). This will bring you back out onto the foreshore just past the section which is prone to flooding at very high tide.

Follow the directions given in the film canister to find a wooden Footpath signpost.
Count the number of directions that the signpost arms point to and call this number K

Multiply K times 34 and add this total to your present Northings
Multiply K times 7 and deduct this number from your present Westings.

You now have the location of the final cache.
