Geocache Description:

Make a visit to the Stearns County History Museum and the Heritage Nature Center for this cache.

Bernard "Barney" Overbeck (1829-1898) was an original Minnesota pioneer. Among other things,Mr. Overbeck was the first coroner in Stearns County and one-time Sheriff. He was one of the original Alderman in the new city of Saint Cloud and her first tax collector. He was even elected to the MN Legislature in 1866.

The building you will see here was built by Balshazzar Rosenberger and sold to Mr. Overbeck in 1855. Much like Mr. Overbeck, his "cabin" would serve many important functions throughout the early years of this community. It first served as a hotel when Saint Cloud was important stop on the Red River Oxcart Trail between Saint Paul and Canada. Later it would function as as a government office, the basement became a jail, first floor the Sheriff's office while lodging could be secured by means of an outside ladder to the second floor loft.

This log building was originally erected at 6th Avenue and 1st Street in Saint Cloud, the heart of the young city. It was moved to Riverside Park in 1916 and spent many years there. The Overbeck cabin now rest with it's smaller companion smoke house nearby, on the edge of the woods at the Heritage Nature Center.

I would like to thank the Stearn County History Museum (visit link) and the Heritage Nature Center for their cooperation in placing this cache.
