Garrett County is the westernmost and the last county to be formed in Maryland, when it was split off from nearby Allegany County in 1872. It was named for John Garrett, President of the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad from 1858 until his death in 1884. This railroad played a major part in the settling and growth of Garrett County, which is the only part of Maryland that is within the Mississippi River watershed.
You'll get some nice views of the rolling hills and farmland of northern Garrett County from this rest stop and overlook, located on Rt. 219 not far from I-68. After finding the easy cache-n-dash take some time to enjoy the view, and then visit the rest of Garrett County.
Be sure to also log the nearby Benchmark (JW1720 - BC 47 Reset), located near the big stump at the picnic area.
Please replace the cache carefully as the muggle activity here can be quite high. Thanks.
