Kenobi 11 - Cobble the Beaver Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Judy-Wan Kenobi: Well, there's too many no-finds. It must have disappeared, and I'm not likely to check it out until spring. I hope that those that found it enjoyed it, and that those that didn't at least enjoyed the hike.

Geocache Description:

Peanut Butter Jar up the hill from the path.

This cache is halfway between Beaver Flat and Cobble Flats. Take hike 313A from Gillean Daffern’s “Kananaskis Country Trail Guide”.

Park at the pullout 300 m west of Beaver Flat campground entrance – at N50 51.214 W114 47.850.

From the book:
“Hop over the guard rail and pick your way down rocks to a metal post. Descend a trail to a T-junction. Turn LEFT.” (I know it seems wrong, but do it anyway – because if you turn right, you’re going to be taking hike 313B instead.)

“At a junction above cliffs overlooking the Elbow River, turn right and drop to river level. Cross Rainy Creek on rocks.”

“The trail continues, faithfully following the right bank of the Elbow through a scenic narrows once touted for a reservoir, the river racing over a boulder garden below the steep rocky slopes of Iyarhe Ipan, meaning “mountain corner” or “mountain point”.”

“The trail shortcuts across a really tight bend and runs BELOW a scree slope…” (Trust me – don’t climb to the top!)

A short distance past the scree slope is where we placed the cache. It’s a few meters uphill from the path. Then, continue the hike to Cobble Flats, or head back to the car. The picnic area (and facilities) at Cobble Flats is at N50 49.187 W114 48.300.

We passed many different paw prints in the sand along the river.

The cache is a Peanut Butter jar, containing some finders cards as well as the coveted FIRST TO FIND card.

Much of this hike is about Terrain 2-3, but there are some parts that are definitely a 4-5 – like right at the start. The cache itself is very easy to find – it is only hidden from passers-by, not those who follow their GPS units.

On a personal note, we tried to complete the loop and take Hike 313B from Cobble Flats back to the car, but at a certain point, we completely lost the trail. Feeling that we were not being totally successful, we decided to head over to the highway, dealing with some significant terrain slopes. To protect my GPS unit, I stuffed it in my pocket. Sometime later, I realized that it had fallen out. Retracing our steps, we found it floating in the creek! Oops! The net result was that on the way home, we stopped off at GPS Central to pick up the latest and greatest for me (including a lanyard). The ruined unit, a Magellan Meridian Gold, has served me well for almost 1000 caches in 3 years, and a lot of travel in unfamiliar territory.

A couple of weeks later, we decided to do the loop in the counter clockwise direction. The 313B portion was much better. For starters, we knew we were on the path. And it was a really pleasant hike – much nicer than the 313A bit.

We had some challenges with the cache coordinates, so the above is an average reading. Here are some of our readings – note the variations:
N50 50.458 W114 47.163
N50 50.460 W114 47.170
N50 50.459 W114 47.171
N50 50.457 W114 47.173
N50 50.458 W114 47.174
N50 50.470 W114 47.185
N50 50.469 W114 47.186

Enjoy the hike and the cache.
