This is a multi-cache that is located in the boundaries of the Blackhawk Lake Recreation Area an Iowa county park.
Park at group site parking below and head down the entrance road of the group camp sites. A word of precaution, BUG SPRAY! OK, that’s two words, but the horse flies can get a bit annoying. The Hillcrest Hiking Trail begins between sites G3 and G4. This trail is groomed and very easy hiking, even for a small child. Your destination is about .85 mi from the parking lot and 90% of your trip will be on these very level trails. Near the beginning of your hike, you will enter group site G4, just continue around the back of the site where the path continues into the woods.
Blackhawk charges a $5 a day park pass, so you may opt to park at the free state parking area where a hiking trail starts directly across the road and heads uphill to the main trail. It’s a bit further but will save you the park entrance fee.
When you arrive to the coordinates, you will be greeted by a sign to Wisconsin’s tallest white oak tree. From here you will need to project a waypoint using three numbers from this sign. Forget about the units on the sign. Add the height and width of this tree, this will be the distance in yards to project and the bearing will be the tree’s circumference. Remember, this is easy walking, even off the trail for the younger cachers. The cache is actually located about 40 feet from the projected waypoint, but is easily found if you think like a cacher and remember easiest way is the best way.
The cache is an ammo box and started with a bean bag fish, cheese head pin, a billiard cue ball, a tube of hand lotion, a toy car, some link chain, a jumping bean and a log book with three pens (please sign and date with any comments). Remember to leave the cache as you found it so other may enjoy it also.
This is a beautiful 600 acre park and a hidden treasure itself in southwest Wisconsin. Make sure to drive through the park (no pass is required if you don’t park) and check out the 150 camp sites, the beach/picnic area, view the 220 acre man-made lake (bass and pan-fish are abundant). This is a great family park for a day or weekend outing.
