Geocache Description:

This is Falkland’s 2nd cache, a "CANADA" themed cache in a regular container, hid in a regular way and located just off of Falkland Road, less than 1 km from Highway 97. Falkland is a rural community of about 600 residents, situated along Highway 97, between Vernon and Kamloops, 26 miles (42 km) from Vernon in the east and 45 miles (72 km) from Kamloops in the west.

Falkland epitomizes the spirit of Canadian unity with the massive Canadian flag on the mountainside overlooking the town, made from sheets of painted plywood, and considered by many to be the largest Canadian flag in the nation. The cache/parking location should give you a pretty good view of this hillside flag. ***As you have to park on the side of the road, please exercise care by not parking too close to the blind corner and keeping well to the side.

Cache contents include log book, pencil, geocache info page, and numerous items with a Canadian theme: pins, magnets, clip, keychains, moose, balloon, pen, and ??? Using your imagination, it should be easy to stay with this theme! (eg. items with flags/maple leafs or CANADA printed on them, Canadian stamps, Canadian money, Canadian animals etc.).

Annual events in Falkland include the Torch Light Parade every July 1, Daisy Days in August, the Falkland International Dog Sled Races, a two-day event on the second weekend in January, and the Falkland Stampede on the May long weekend, which offers 3 days of rodeo action, a parade and dances.

With so many small lakes in the area, there is no shortage of recreation sites for fishing, camping and picnicking. Established recreation sites surrounding Falkland include those at Joyce Lake, Pillar Lake, Chase Creek, Charcoal Creek, Bolean Lake, Spa Lake, Arthur Lake, Spanish Lake, Square Lake, and Pinaus Lake.

And of course no trip to Falkland is complete without stopping at Pillar Lake. Geocachers, hikers, rockhounds, photographers and nature lovers will enjoy The Pillar, a 90-foot unique geological conglomerate of dirt and rock that can be reached via a short hike. A giant bony finger, the Falkland hoodoo, points skyward, balancing a precariously perched eight-tonne boulder on its tip. Check out GCVHZ8 Hearthbreak Hoodoo, 11 km north on the Chase-Falkland Road.

Little story that I thought you'd like: Our granddaughter, Rugrat #3 who is 3 yrs. old, loves to sing "Oh Canada" and is always singing it, while she plays or even sitting in the loo. You'd laugh if you heard her version. "Oh Canada . . . we pay for love!"
