Geocache Description:

The cache is located in the Southern Bakony Mountains near the city Ajka 430 meters above the sea level. The terrain is not difficult and the location might be approached on asphalt road by bike or car, however the cache is hidden in the woods and the soil might be muddy after rain.

The cache is a round plastic kitchen container with the dimensions of 22*12 centimeters. It is kindly requested that the cache is hidden precautionary due to the potential traffic both on the nearby road and the nature trail.

Introduction

The nearby city, Ajka is situated at the western slopes of the Southern Bakony Mountains, 40 kilometres north of Lake Balaton, the largest lake in Central Europe. The area was rich in ore and mineral resources, bauxite and brow coal from the Cretaceous Age among them, that used to attract industry until recently.

There is archeological evidence that the area is inhabited since the Neolithic age and the names of the small settlements of the area are mentioned in early written documents found, preceding those mentioning the city they are currently connected to.

The Sárcsi-Well Nature Path

The nature path introduces the inhabitants of the beech and turkey oak forests of the northwestern slopes of Kab Hill. The 4.1 kilometers long nature trail helps to understand the formation of the Southern Bakony Mountains and the Kab Hill, provides information on members of the forest ecosystem and the forest management.

The trailhead of the nature path is at the László Well (László-kút) near the Hubertus Forest School next to the Yellow (stripe) Hiking Trail. There is a parking lot nearby. Although it is not necessary to retrieve the cache it is recommended to walk through the nature trail partly along the hiking trail signs and guided by the information tables in the rest of the trail. It takes around 90-120 minutes of walking. There are illustrated tables at 28 stages of the trail, the Sárcsi Well being the 19th.
For those who would like to omit the nature trail the parking lot is a good starting point, it is very close to the well itself.

The Hubertus Forest School

The Hubertus Forest School was founded by the VERGA Ltd., the regional forest management company of the Ministry of Defence in the fall of 2002. The main goal of the forest school is to introduce the nature and the environment to children via personal experience, an active pursuit of understanding and discovery. This way the learning incorporates acquiring respect to and admiration of nature and environmental consciousness. In the summer of 2003. the forest school was extended with a new classroom and additional accomodation facilities, so now it is capable to welcome classes and groups even from outside the region in all seasons. (More on forest schools for primary education here. )

Transportation

The easiest way to approach the cache site is by bike from Ajka or by car. For the latter leave the national road Nr. 8 to go through Ajka and turn left at a crossroad 6,1 kilometres after leaving the city [GCSCSI+cross1]. (Note that when approaching the crossroads from the direction of Padragkút one should turn to the right.) After 1450 meters turn easy right [GCSCSI+cross2] and keep towards the yellow sign for 5500 meters (leaving the Jókai mine) until you reach the parking lot and picnic area.
The hiders would like to thank KiVi for the help.
We wish fellow geocachers a great time walking around and retrieving the cache.

Attention!

There is a fake cachebox found near the actual cache. The intentions of the hider are unclear. A picture about the fake cache is in the gallery.
