Geocache Description:

My 50th cache hide, and the first on Ironbound Island.

Please note: The island is almost completely private property. Please respect that on your visit. Do not cut across lawns or people's house lots or fields on your visit; stay on the roads, follow the shoreline and beaches, and usually there are old hunting paths just inside the edge of the woods when the shoreline turns into cliffs that meet the forest edge. These caches are present on the condition of respect from visiting cachers. Thankyou.

Ironbound is so small it isn't labelled on many maps, but yet it has gathered a lot of attention over the years.

  • It was included in an Atlantic Film Board special on children in remote communities called You Laugh Like a Duck.
  • It was the subject of the Land and Sea episode EbbTide in 1982, with a followup episode that aired in 2006.
  • It was used as a basis for Rockbound, the 2005 CBC Canada Reads winner.
  • It was also visited by the author of Windward Island for a book she wrote.
  • It was used as a location in the film Deeply, starring Kirsten Dunst and Lynn Redgrave.

This geocache is the first one hidden on the island.

Please Note: The cache is hidden on private property with the permission of the property owner. However, if you seek this cache, you assume all liability for your own safety and agree that if you decide to fall off a cliff and break your leg the landowner is in no way liable. The landowner also grants geocachers a right of way to the cache from the shoreline only (which is the shortest route). PLEASE DO NOT go up the main road on the island and then cut down through the landowner's driveway and yard to reach the cache location.

To reach the cache, simply follow the shoreline from the public wharf. When you are almost abreast of it you will see a small clearing. Leave the beach at this point and proceed to the cache.
The cache is hidden under a structure that used to be suspended in the trees, but which came down (in relatively one piece) some years ago. There may be old boards with nails from part of a platform in the area, so don't step blindly around the cache. If I get chance I may clear the area out a bit this summer. Enjoy the view along the shore as you walk.

Terrain is at 5 since you need a boat to reach the island. Once there, the terrain is about a 2.5 for this cache.
