This cache starts in the wonderful Ampthill Park and finishes “somewhere else”. On your way you’ll need to collect 3 samples of DNA. You need all three to find the co-ordinates of the final cache. You could easily make this a circular walk if you want; I’ve left details of how to do this in the final cache together with the co-ordinates to a bonus cache which is in the “middle of Ampthill” so it’s on the way back to your car if you retrace your steps or if you take the circular route back.
We always enjoy Geocaches which involve a really nice walk. This cache does indeed involve a nice walk. From the starting waypoint to the final cache it’s about 1.2 miles of undulating terrain which rules out pushchairs I’m afraid. Expect a return trip of about 3.5 miles depending where you park and which way you walk back to your car. Andy Bird and Ladybugs House Beautiful is close by, so, if you haven’t already done this cache now’s your chance whilst you are in the area.
I originally took the co-ordinates in winter when the tree cover was a little Spartan. In the height of summer your GPS will go haywire between the caches but all of the them are close to the footpaths so there’s no need to go off piste until you are right on the money! Take care if you have a dog as you’ll pass some horses in a stable and from time to time a farmer puts cows in a field which one of the footpaths cross. That said for the majority of the year the fields are empty so don’t let this put you off.
There are loads of places you can park to do this cache. Personally I’d suggest parking at the side of the road here N52 02 065 W000 29 694 but if this area is busy then you could park in any of the roadside lay-bys or the car park around here N52 01 935 W000 30 110
There are loads of paths within Ampthill park so you may end up going “the long way round” if you are not familiar with the park, so, I’d recommend heading to this waypoint first N52 02 078 W000 29 920 before actually trying to find the first cache (nothing is hidden here, it’s just somewhere to aim for if you’ve parked where I’ve suggested)
The First cache is hidden at the base of a beech tree at N52 02 177 W000 30 049 you will find your first DNA sample here and the co-ordinates to the second cache. This location is quite exposed so keep a look out for Muggles at busy times.
Just stick to the well defined paths to locate the second DNA sample, you don't need to crawl through the trees to get to it. You'll find the co-ords for the second cache at in the first one.
Enjoy
