Located in an area of open access land on the Lake District
National Park boundary.
Just the other side of the wall close to where the cache is located
is a long abandoned horse-racing track. The embanked track can
still be clearly seen today
On Tuesday the 1st May 1821 Kendal’s new racecourse staged it first
event. This was on the newly constructed embanked racetrack on an
area known as Fishers Plain..
Between 1821 and 1830 the racecourse held the annual Kendal Gold
Cup which was a three-day meeting. Ten years later many races had
been abandoned with only a steeplechase continuing.
In 1850 the Grandstand and course materials were sold off. There
was a brief revival after World War One with some trotting races
being held in 1922 and 1923.
The area was also the location for Kendal’s first Golf club, The
Cunswick Golf Club, who used the racecourse as part of the golf
course in 1891. The club acquired new land adjacent to Serpentine
woods in 1897 and changed its name to the Serpentine Gold Club. It
would concentrate development of the course in this area before
being renamed the Kendal Golf Club in 1907.
Note: The cache is on the other (West) side of the wall to the old
race track. Please approach the cache from the open access land
side of the wall (West).
