Olneya Tesota, commonly known as Palo Fierro or
the Ironwood tree is actually a woody legume which is closely
related to the Brushpea.
It flowers in late spring and by early summer,
the pods mature. Each 2-inch pod contains one to four shiny brown
seeds. The species was first described in 1854 by botanist Asa
Gray. Olneya Tesota is distinguished by its paired leaves, flower
clusters on short shoots that extend from the middle of the stem
(instead of the end of a branch), and by its rounded seed
pods.
