Geocache Description:

This is a series of 12 caches found in various towns in the Eastern Cape of South Africa that forms the Frontier Country.

The cache is found in the botanical gardens next to the famous Rhodes university.

The Frontier Country tells tales of where British,Xhosa and Afrikaners struggled to retain land as the country of South Africa expanded to the east, away from the British colony. The wars that took place in the area was mainly fought over possession of land.
The first frontier war broke out in 1780 and market the beginning of the Xhosa struggle to preserve their traditional customs and way of life. It was a struggle that was to increase in intensity when the British arrived on the scene.

Grahamstown was established in 1812 by Colonel John Graham, the first town of its kind to be established by the British in South Africa. His brief was to survey the surrounding area around the Fish River which formed the new border with Xhosa territories. The area to errect the town was chosen on the abundance of water in the area. It started of as a military garrison and forms the site of the famous 1819 attack by Nxele (Makana) in his attempt to halt European incursion into Xhosa territory.

As the europeans moved more north and east, the garrison followed behind and the town became an educational institude, forming the main infrastructure.Grahamstown also have the highest church spire in the country, designed by sir Giles Scott who is a famous architect of many famous buildings of the Victorian era.
