When The Shark Bites. Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

magneto2: Although I feel that this is an interesting geocache, I am no longer involved with the Geocaching experience. If someone else could take it over that would be great. If an adoption is not possible, I will remove the cache. I appreciate and believe that this is a great program.

Sincerely,
Michael Culotta

Geocache Description:

Your coordinates will lead you to an area where you will need to park on the shoulder of the road. Be sure you park safely. Everyone, especially if you have children, should be careful near the highway. The speed limit is 70 mph here.

Much of Texas was changing shape between the Mesozoic and Cenozoic Eras. During the Cretaceous period, vast areas were beneath marine waters. Through many millions of years land masses changed. Most of Texas remained under water. And what is one of the most ancient animals to swim in these waters? That’s right, Sharks. There is a place in East Texas where you can find a Treasure from this ancient past.

The seas receded and vegetation took hold. The first known humans in this area were the Paleo-Indians, dating back 8,000 to 11,000 ago. And here we are today. Clues to this past can be found right here in Cherokee County. You will be looking in an area where the layered walls are quite steep. Highway work along with years of erosion has allowed access to these ancient layers where you may find shark teeth. They are petrified so they are brittle and will break if you are not careful. Read the note on the picture. You do not need special tools to discover these teeth. The petrified teeth are not in the rocks but in the soft and crumbly clay. You can use your fingers. In fact, you should break pieces of the clay little by little or you will miss your find. Sometimes you don't even have to dig. Just look in the clay rubble at your feet. Rain will also expose some teeth. Please do not plan on a major excavation or the area may be closed to relic hunters. Do not be greedy. Take one or two for your collection. And be patient, you will find at least one. I have been here five times in five years and I find at least one tooth each time. Some are large and some are small, but they are treasures all.

Oh yes, the cache. Your coordinates will bring you to this general area where you will be looking for tree roots that are curvy. You may also smell cedar. You'll find an ammo box with a chain. In it you will find a log and goodies. It is hidden so please replace as you found it. Good luck and be careful.
